Vinyl Building Materials Provide 'Extreme Makeover' for Tornado Victims

JOPLIN, Mo., Jan. 12, 2012 – The series finale of ABC’s “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition,” will feature vinyl windows, doors, fencing, and siding on homes for victims of the devastating tornado that struck here.

On May 22, 2011, a tornado with winds of more than 200 miles per hour and reaching a maximum width of nearly one mile, devastated Joplin.   Houses and businesses were flattened, with some knocked off their foundations, and 160 people were killed.

Last fall, the “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” crew came to Joplin and took part in the construction of seven homes in seven days.  Accompanied by 10,000 volunteers including general contractors and skilled tradesmen from across the country, the show built homes for families who lost theirs.

Ply Gem Inc. partnered with the show, supplying home exterior products with a retail value of more than $300,000, including vinyl siding, designer accents and skirting, vinyl fencing and railing, stone veneer and vinyl windows and doors.  Ply Gem also sent 50 company associates to the building sites to help with the project, according to Chris Pickering, Ply Gem vice president of marketing.

Each of the seven home styles from The Designed Exterior by Plygem was inspired by the personality of the specific families.

Vinyl building products have been featured in “Extreme Makeover:  Home Edition” throughout its nine-season run, with many companies providing energy-efficient windows and other products used in several episodes.

The Joplin project marks the 200th and final episode of "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition," which is set to air on ABC at 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 13.
