Vinyl Product Suppliers Receive GPEC 2010 Environmental Awards

NEWTOWN, Conn. July 1, 2010 – The Plastics Environmental Division of the Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE) presented two of its 2010 Environmental Stewardship Awards to vinyl product suppliers for their recycling efforts.

The awards were presented March 9th in Orlando at the division’s Global Plastics Environmental Conference (GPEC). These awards, presented annually, were created to recognize environmental leadership and excellence.

Kevin Cronin of Nicos Polymers Group received the Chairman’s Award for a proprietary process for the removal of continuous fiber reinforcement from flexible composites, allowing for recovery of the polymer substrate. Originally developed for reclaiming
PVC from garden hose, the process is also effective with industrial hoses, single-ply roofing membrane (both TPO and PVC based), and architectural wall coverings.

Dave Kitts of Mannington Mills received the “Carpet/Floor/Wall Coverings Recycling
Award” for its program for recycling post-consumer carpet into carpet and resilient flooring, to now include vinyl composition tile. Mannington has introduced three premium commercial tile product lines with 25 percent post-consumer content, and the product includes recycled drywall diverted from landfills. Mannington has already prevented millions of pounds of used vinyl composition tile from being sent to landfills.

The Society of Plastics Engineers was founded in 1942, and helps companies in the plastics industry succeed by spreading knowledge, strengthening skills, and promoting plastics. For more information on SPE, go to www.4spe.org.

The Vinyl Institute, founded in 1982, represents the leading manufacturers involved in the production of PVC/vinyl resin in the United States, as well as makers of vinyl feedstocks, additives, and film and sheet products, and promotes the value of PVC/vinyl products to society.
